Snail Rock Ling Cod

A beautiful fall day and no deer seen while hunting in the muskegs by kah shakes cove, so Dave and I decided to do a little bit of exploring. With the sun shining and no wind on the water, the visibility displayed all moving below us in the shallows by snail rock…as I searched for movement, a presence became visible, slender yet powerful…a ling cod! Twenty feet below us, with no plans to fish that day, we were without any fishing poles in the skiff, and as often happens when necessity meets opportunity, with some digging around, I was able to find a 3-sided jig with a length of monofilament that I was able to tie to a piece of ¼ inch rope!

The line looked old and faded but we had hope! As it lowered into the water, the flashing sides attracted a ling and it attacked it readily! The fish struggled as I retrieved the line and Dave gaffed it aboard, handlining ling cod! It was so much fun we did it three more times. Definitely unplanned but we
welcomed the bounty of fresh fish and even sent some to town to share with others…a memorable experience, a great day and a good friend!
